Throw Away < Give Away
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. No, this isn’t an endorsement to offer up literal trash, such as used Kleenexes, food remnants, and worthless scraps of generic paper, however for used items you have fallen out of favor with, at least see if there is a person out there in the wide world who might find use for it.This is particularly relevant towards larger items, such as furniture, that might have become too ratty or worn for your particular situation. College students and underprivileged individuals might just appreciate somewhere to sit or put their things, even vintage collectors or hoarders might see your would-be discarded item and have it catch their eye. All of these solutions are significantly better than letting your unwanted stuff fill up a landfill. It’s not just furniture that is exclusively in question. There are plenty of items that may seem like junk to you but could perfectly accent another’s room or provide some sort of enjoyment. It may be out of style or of literally no value in the open market, but some people seek out such trinkets in an effort to be “ironic.” After all, there’s no way to completely anticipate the full spectrum of the human eye for design or fashion sense. If you can’t find a buyer you know, try putting your stuff on eBay. So as not to earn negative feedback, do so in full disclosure. In the description, just write that you would otherwise be throwing it away and only ask for reimbursement for shipping, nothing else. As a last resort, set any remotely intriguing items next to the dumpster as opposed to inside the dumpster. This will give one final chance to any passerby who’s curiosity might be aroused, a proverbial Hail Mary pass to give potential trash new life. Only once you’ve exhausted every last alternative should legitimate trash make its way to the depths of no return.
